Some patients prefer considerable movement to remain. Others are happier with a greater degree of relaxation and smoothing. Neither approach is inherently right or wrong, provided treatment remains safe and appropriate. This is something we discuss during your consultation.
What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
Many of the lines we develop on the upper face are caused by repeated muscular movement. Frowning, raising the eyebrows and smiling repeatedly fold the skin in the same places. Over time, these expression lines can become increasingly visible, eventually remaining even when the face is at rest.
Anti-wrinkle injections use small amounts of muscle-relaxing product to temporarily reduce the activity of carefully selected facial muscles allowing the overlying lines to soften.

What Areas Can Be Treated?
Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used to treat areas on the upper face where excessive muscular activity contributes to unwanted or excessive lines, particularly:
frown lines between the eyebrows
horizontal forehead lines
crow's feet around the outer corners of the eyes
along the jaw-line and neck, the so-called Nefertiti lift
However, not every facial line is caused by muscle movement, and anti-wrinkle injections are not necessarily the right treatment for every wrinkle.
Deciding where to treat is only part of the process. Equally important is deciding where not to treat and how much movement should be preserved.

Who Is Suitable for Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
Anti-wrinkle injections are particularly effective for dynamic lines, those lines caused predominantly by repeated facial movement.
Someone with strong frown muscles, for example, may develop increasingly prominent vertical lines between the eyebrows; the so-called 11s. Reducing excessive muscular activity can produce an improvement that would be difficult to achieve with treatments directed just at the skin surface.
However, facial ageing is more complicated than just wrinkles.
Changes in skin quality, loss of facial volume and changes in the underlying structure of the face will not necessarily improve with anti-wrinkle injections. In these circumstances other treatments may be more appropriate.

Your Consultation
Before recommending anti-wrinkle injections we will assess your face both at rest and during expression. Different people use their facial muscles very differently, and even apparently similar forehead or frown lines can require quite different treatment.

understand your preferences, including how much movement you would prefer to retain
plan the areas and dosage carefully
discuss likely results, limitations and side-effects

What Happens During Treatment?
Once your treatment plan has been agreed, small doses of anti-wrinkle product are injected, using a fine needle, into carefully selected facial muscles.
The injections themselves usually take only a short time. The more important part of the appointment is the assessment and planning that precedes them.
The position and strength of the facial muscles vary considerably between individuals. The dosage and injection points therefore need to be selected for the person being treated rather than simply following a standard template.
Most patients find the injections easily manageable. The needles used are very fine, and any discomfort is brief and localised. A topical anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand for patients who are particularly sensitive.
The procedure typically takes fifteen to twenty minutes and most people return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

Refined — Not Frozen
Almost every patient who comes to us considering anti-wrinkle injections raises the same concern, they don't want to look “too frozen”.
A frozen or expressionless appearance is not an inevitable consequence of anti-wrinkle treatment.
This is a concern we address fully in the frozen face - separating fact from fiction.
When Will I See the Results?
The effect is gradual rather than immediate.
Most patients begin to notice a change within 3-5 days, with the result continuing to develop over the following 10-14 days.
We aim to review treatment at 2-3 weeks. This allows sufficient time for the effect to develop and gives us an opportunity to assess the result once the treated muscles have responded fully.
How Long Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Last and How Often Will I Need Treatment?
Results typically last for 3-4 months, but in some people may be shorter or longer.
The effect does not suddenly disappear. Muscle activity gradually returns and facial movement increases again. Eventually, the expression lines softened by treatment become more noticeable.
There is no single treatment interval that is right for everyone. We generally prefer treatment to be guided by the return of a degree of muscular movement and your own preferences rather than automatically scheduling injections at a fixed interval.

Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections Safe?
Anti-wrinkle toxin has been used in medicine for many years and has a well-established safety profile when appropriately prescribed and administered.
However, no medical treatment is completely without side effects.
Common temporary effects can include redness, tenderness, slight swelling or bruising around an injection site. Less commonly, treatment can produce an unwanted effect on a nearby muscle, such as temporary difference in brow position (asymmetry) or a change in eyelid position.
We think patients should understand both the benefits and the potential disadvantages of any aesthetic procedure before deciding whether to proceed.

Aftercare
There is generally no downtime following anti-wrinkle injections, and most patients return to their usual daily activities immediately.
We will give you appropriate aftercare advice following treatment, including any activities we recommend avoiding temporarily.
If you have any concerns after leaving the clinic, you can contact us for advice. Your care does not end when you walk out of the treatment room.
Follow-Up
We normally offer a review approximately 2–3 weeks after treatment. A follow-up appointment is particularly advisable following a first treatment.
It allows us to assess the response and balance of facial movement and decide whether any further treatment is appropriate. It also helps us build a clinical picture that can improve future treatments.
