A follow-up appointment after wrinkle relaxing injections is not an optional extra. It is an essential part of good clinical practice.

At The Cosmetic Doctors Company, every first treatment includes a follow-up as a matter of course, usually at 2~3 weeks. Here is why it is important.

The result will not be visible on the day

Botulinum toxin does not act immediately. The effect develops gradually over five to fourteen days, which means neither the patient nor the clinician can assess the outcome at the time of treatment. The follow-up appointment is when the result can actually be evaluated and that distinction matters. Assessing a treatment before it has finished working is not assessment at all.

Dose and distribution are not an exact science

Every face is different, and every patient responds slightly differently to botulinum toxin. Muscle mass, skin thickness, previous treatment history, and individual neuromuscular variation all influence the outcome. The follow-up allows us to review whether the dose was well-judged, whether its distribution achieved the intended effect, and whether any refinement is needed. Without it, that information is simply lost.

Any asymmetry can be identified and corrected

Facial asymmetry is almost universal. Most patients have some degree of difference between the two sides that they may never have noticed before treatment. Occasionally, a small asymmetry becomes more apparent once the muscles have relaxed, or a minor difference in response between sides produces an imbalance that warrants attention. The 2~3 follow-up appointment is when this can be identified and, where appropriate, an additional dose used to correct it.

It informs any subsequent treatments

The follow-up is not only about the current result; it is also about building a clinical picture that improves future treatments. We always keep a detailed record of the dose and pattern of injections used, as well as what worked well, what could be refined, where the patient felt the result was slightly stronger or weaker than they wanted. All of this informs future appointments. Over time, this is what produces consistently good outcomes rather than variable ones.

Why many clinics don't offer one

Volume-driven clinics often do not include a follow-up because it is time-consuming and not directly billable; impacting on their financial bottom-line. Does the follow-up cost extra?

Does the same principle apply to other treatments?

Yes, though the form it takes varies. With dermal fillers, a review at two weeks allows the product to have settled fully before the result is assessed; swelling can flatter or obscure the outcome in the days immediately after treatment. With Sculptra, follow-up is built into the treatment protocol itself; results develop over several months and successive sessions are planned around that timeline. With polynucleotides, a course of treatment involves multiple sessions by design, and each visit is in effect both a treatment and a progress review. In every case, the underlying principle is the same: good aesthetic medicine is a process, not a transaction.
