The Conversation Men Don't Have - Until They Do
Most men spend considerably longer thinking about aesthetic treatment than women do. Here is what that conversation usually looks like when it finally happens and why it is worth having sooner.
The long deliberation
Most men who come to our Surrey-based clinic, for a first aesthetic consultation, will have been thinking about it for some time. Not days or weeks. Often months, sometimes years. They have noticed something changing in the mirror :
a hollowing around the temples
a loss of definition along the jawline
a persistent look of being tired that no amount of sleep seems to resolve
a deep frown, even when they’re not aware of frowning
They have been sitting with these quietly, wondering whether anything can be done, and whether doing something about it is something they are prepared to do.
A man looking for a clinical discussion that reflects his face, his concerns, and his idea of an acceptable outcome has, until relatively recently, had to search quite hard to find one.
That deliberation is entirely understandable. Aesthetic medicine has not historically made men feel particularly welcome in its conversation. The imagery, the language, and the treatment goals it tends to present are predominantly female.
What men actually want
When that first conversation does happen, it tends to be refreshingly clear. Men are not, in our experience, vague about what they want.
They want to look :
fresh & well
like themselves, but better
like they are getting enough sleep,
like they are taking care of themselves, on top of things.
What they emphatically do not want is to look as though they have had anything done. The idea of a visible change, of colleagues noticing, of friends asking questions, is often the single biggest barrier between a man and the consultation he has been considering.
This is not vanity. It is an entirely rational set of priorities, and it is one that modern aesthetic medicine, done well, is very well placed to address.
What treatment for men actually looks like
The treatments that tend to work best for male patients share a common quality: they are structural and gradual rather than immediate and obvious.
Botox injections, used conservatively, soften the lines that make a man look angry or exhausted in repose without removing the expression that makes him look like himself.
Sculptra addresses the volume loss and structural change that can make a face look gaunt or depleted, restoring a quality of solidity and health that reads as vitality rather than treatment.
Skin quality treatments improve the overall condition and texture of the skin in ways that are noticed as looking well, not as looking different.
None of these results happen overnight. That gradual timeline, which some patients find frustrating, tends to suit male patients particularly well. There is no moment at which the change is visible to others; only a slow and consistent improvement that the patient notices long before anyone else does. Most men will be more comfortable with the modern trend of The Art of Doing Less.
The conversation that changes things
The men who leave a first consultation most relieved are almost always the ones who waited longest to come. What they expected to be an uncomfortable or unfamiliar experience turns out to be a straightforward clinical conversation about what has changed, what can be done about it, and what is realistic.
At the Cosmetic Doctors Company in Esher, Surrey there will be no pressure, no sales pitch, and no agenda beyond giving them the information they need to make a decision that is right for them.
